Reviews

-=-Review 1 : Written by o r k m a n(jangminsu@yahoo.com)-=-

This is a CD reissue of the zeuhl classic from 1979. Jean-Philippe Goude was a keyboard player of Weidorje, the zeuhl band Bernard Paganotti and Patrick Gauthier founded in 1977, and he also played with Richard Pinhas. In this album, a lot of Names appear as guests : Bernard Paganotti, David Rose, Kirt Rust, Richard Pinhas, Patrick Gauthier, Klaus Blasquiz, Quartour Margand, Gerard Prevost and other dozens of less known artists. With this diverse line-up, Jean-Philippe Goude presents diverse musical styles - zeuhl, jazz fusion, Heldon-ish synth noodling accompanied by string quartet(?) among others. Les Saturnales and Dies Irae are played mainly by ex-Weidorje members and so display distinct Weidorje blend of hard zeuhl. In these two pieces, B. Paganotti's growling & melodiously impressive bass adds more power and dipicts good contrapunctal effect againt J.-P Goude's minimalistic melody lines. Another noticeable track is Machine which is contributed mainly by Richard Pinhas and Quartour Margand(Margand String Quartet). This piece combines Pinhas' pulsating acid synth rhythms with a string quartet, quite a strange combination. J.-P Goude's delicate sense of manipulating the strings reveals his vague classical background. And this sense develops further with his later career as a soundtrack composer. J.-P Goude is very skilled at merging independent melodies to build a complex and highly dynamic whole. And in that regard, his fascination on Minimalism a la Phillip Glass and Terry Reily had an important effect upon his composition style.

One big flaw of this CD reissue is a bonus track. Not only it ruins the interesting melodic coincidence of Les Saturnales and Cantilene, which are respectively the first and the last track of the original album, but also it's 'almost' a bad piece when considering the names of the three players - Jean-Philippe, Patrick and Benoit. Well, as a final word I'd like to emphasize that this album should be listened to many times to be properly appreciated. Many will find it so entertaining to concentrate on individual melody lines and look how they are crossed between each other.
